Biografia
Beppe Severgnini è editorialista e vice-direttore del Corriere della Sera, dov’è arrivato nel 1995. Per il quotidiano di via Solferino conduce il blog Italians (dal 1998), tiene l’omonima rubrica settimanale (dal 2001), la videorubrica Fotosintesi (dal 2019) e il podcast RadioItalians (dal 2021). Ha diretto il settimanale 7 per 777 giorni tra il 2017 al 2019.
Dal 2013 al 2021 è stato opinion writer per The New York Times, dal 1996 al 2003 corrispondente in Italia per The Economist. Ha lavorato per il Giornale di Indro Montanelli (1981-1994) e per la Voce (1994-1995).
È autore di molti libri, tradotti in diverse lingue. Il primo è “Inglesi” (1990), il più recente è “Un italiano”, scritto con Francesco Paolo Figliuolo (2022). “La testa degli italiani” (2005) è diventato un New York Times bestseller col titolo “La Bella Figura: A Field Guide to the Italian Mind”, ed è tradotto in quindici lingue.
Da “La vita è un viaggio” (2014) ha tratto uno spettacolo teatrale, da lui stesso interpretato. Nel 2015-2016 ha ideato, scritto e condotto “L’erba dei vicini” (Rai 3). Per la Rai aveva già condotto “Italians, cioè italiani” (1997) e “Luoghi comuni, un viaggio in Italia” (2001 e 2002). Ha lavorato per Sky Italia (2004-2010) e dal 2011 partecipa a “Otto e mezzo” (La7).
Nel 2106-2017 ha ideato “Rock&Talk” su Virgin Radio. Tra il 2007 e il 2013 ha collaborato con Radio Montecarlo (RMC), in precedenza con Rai Radio 2 e BBC radio.
Beppe Severgnini si è laureato all’Università di Pavia e ha lavorato come corrispondente estero a Londra, Mosca, Washington DC; si è occupato di Europa dell’Est, Cina, Medio Oriente.
Ha insegnato alla Scuola di Giornalismo “Walter Tobagi” dell’Università Statale di Milano (dal 2010 al 2020). È stato Visiting Fellow al Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT (2009) e all’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia (2013), Isaiah Berlin Visiting Scholar presso Oxford University (2013), Visiting Lecturer al Politecnico di Milano (2021).
Ha vinto alcuni premi e nel 2004, a Bruxelles, è stato votato “European Journalist of the Year”.
Nel 2001 la Regina Elisabetta II gli ha conferito il titolo di Officer of the British Empire e nel 2011 è stato nominato Commendatore della Repubblica italiana.
Vive a Crema e a Milano.
Beppe Severgnini is a columnist and an editor at Corriere della Sera, which he joined in 1995. He was the editor-in-chief of its weekly magazine 7 from 2017 to 2019, and he created the blog Italians in 1998. He was a contributing opinion writer for The New York Times between 2013 and 2021. His writing has appeared in the Sunday Times, the Financial Times and The Economist, where he was the Italy correspondent from 1996 to 2003.
He’s the author of many books, including the American bestsellers Ciao, America! An Italian Discovers the U.S. and La Bella Figura: A Field Guide to the Italian Mind. Off the Rail – A Train Trip Through Life was published in 2019 by Berkley, New York. Italians Lessons – Fifty Things We Know About Life Now is coming out on May 3, 2022 (Vintage, PenguinRandomhouse).
Mr. Severgnini studied law at the University of Pavia. As a foreign correspondent, he was posted in London, Moscow and Washington; he also covered Eastern Europe, China and the Middle East. He teaches at the School of Journalism of the University of Milan, and he has been a research fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an Isaiah Berlin visiting scholar at Oxford University, a visiting fellow at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice and a visiting lecturer at Politecnico in Milan.
In 2001, Mr. Severgnini was made an Officer of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II, and in 2011 the president of Italy conferred on him the title of commendatore in the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic. He lives near Milan with his wife and he has a granddaughter, Agata.
